Language course types
General language
Courses that build all-round skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing at a pace the school describes as standard. Hours per week still vary a great deal, so compare lessons per week and lesson length before price.
360 published courses
Intensive language
Courses that the school itself calls intensive or that carry more lessons per week than its standard programme. Schools set this threshold differently, so the number of lessons and the lesson length are shown for every course.
208 published courses
Conversation and speaking
Courses that focus on speaking and listening, often as a complement to a general course or as a stand-alone evening class.
25 published courses
Exam preparation
Courses that prepare students for a named language examination. A preparation course does not mean the school is an authorised test centre; that is recorded separately where an exam body or the school states it.
49 published courses
Business and professional
Courses for professionals that teach the language of meetings, presentations, negotiation and correspondence, usually in small groups or one-to-one.
34 published courses
Academic language
Courses that develop reading, writing and listening skills for study contexts, such as academic English or university-level reading in the target language.
48 published courses
University preparation
Courses designed for students who plan to enter a university or pathway programme. Admission is decided by the institution; a course does not promise a place.
35 published courses
Private lessons
One-to-one lessons with a teacher from a school. These are lessons sold by an established language school, not listings of independent tutors.
72 published courses
Small-group courses
Courses where the school publishes a small maximum class size. What counts as small differs between schools, so the published maximum is shown.
81 published courses
Language plus activities
Courses that combine language lessons with an activity such as cooking, art, sport or cultural visits. The activity is often an optional extra, and its price may be separate.
21 published courses
Junior and summer programmes
Programmes for under-18s, often residential and in school holidays. Supervision arrangements are shown only as the provider publishes them, and are not a safety guarantee.
17 published courses
Family programmes
Programmes in which parents and children study at the same school, in the same or in separate classes, as the school describes.

Delivery
- In person
- Lessons take place on the school’s campus.
- Live online
- Lessons are taught live by a teacher on a schedule.
- Hybrid (campus and live online)
- The same course mixes campus lessons and live online lessons.
- Self-paced online
- Learning is done at the student’s own pace with course material. This is not live teaching.
Exam preparation
Preparation courses are listed by the exam they prepare for. Whether a school is also an authorised test centre is recorded separately, only when the exam body or the school says so.
